Hunger Games 411-Tributes

Hi guys! I thought I would just make a quick video outlining The Hunger Games and the tributes in the Hunger Games. I'll make other videos about the other characters in the book/movie later! Although most of you have read the books, I thought it might be a nice refresher since there are 24 tributes. Analysis: The Hunger Games Official Trailer

Okay, so I know everyone and their mother is talking about this, but... I just have to! So if you haven't seen it...watch. I'll wait.

Done? Wow. Just let it soak in there. Here we go...

• District 12 looks legit. A little bit green, but nice and run down.
• The Capitol hovercraft. Does this mean we'll get to see Avox girl even though we only heard about it after in the books?
• I kind of enjoy how all of the kids are dressed in a similar color palette. 
• Effie! I love you. I love how desperate you look and your voice, your voice is brilliant.
• Katniss and Prim together. Breaks my heart.
• Effie swirling her hand around to choose the slip of paper. Amazing.
• When Katniss volunteers for Prim and her voice cracks on the first declaration. I die.
• Gale carrying Prim away. I enjoy this little girl. She's good.
• Peeta just looks so depressed at the Reaping. And we all know why (no, it's not only because he was just called to his death).
• Cinna. I thought I would hate you. I actually kind of dig you. Good on you.
• hahaha oh Caesar. I can't wait to see more of you.
• Oh hey tiny people on fire in the viewfinder. I wonder who you are.
• Rue. You're just so....tiny.
• I see you, Cato.
• Senaca Crane! Nice facial hair, dude. You're what the Capitol is all about.

Hunger Games Trailer on Monday

You guys! Sorry for the lack of posts (school, blah), but I had to share this with you! The official trailer for The Hunger Games movie will be premiering this Monday (11/14/11) on Good Morning America. 

From the announcement: 

"The trailer for the highly-anticipated film will make its world debut on “Good Morning America” Monday, Nov. 14. Actor Josh Hutcherson, who plays the character of Peeta Mellark in the film, will be live in Times Square."

I don't know about you, but I'm excited! Just another thing to add to my DVR (as if all of the Breaking Dawn promotion wasn't enough). Will you be tuning in? What do you hope is in the trailer? I really hope to get a glimpse of some of the muttations. I'm interested to see how they turn out.

Entertainment Weekly: First Look at Peeta and Gale

So, we have our first look at Gale and Peeta in the upcoming issue of "Entertainment Weekly." Take a look!

Gale looks pretty good for me. I always imagined his hair a little scruffier/longer, but I can deal with it. I have been hearing middling thoughts on him, so I agree with most of those.


Now there is Peeta. I have been hearing an overwhelmingly negative consensus. I can't believe it! I actually think Josh makes a really good Peeta. As soon as they announced him, I was like, "Yes!" To me, his facial bone structure is PERFECT for Peeta. I have also been hearing that he looks too muscular in this picture. Um. Peeta is from one of the wealthier families in District 12. He has a bit more food than Gale ever has (even with Gale's hunting--he has all those siblings to feed!). Also, he was a wrestler and for the first training he threw weights around the training center. He lifted those bags of flour all the time at home. Just because his defense in the arena was to camouflage himself, doesn't mean that was all he was capable of doing.


Anyways, this has probably turned into some sort of a rant, but I just really dislike when people are so negative all of the time. We haven't even seen a snippet of a trailer yet and people are already dismissing the movie. For me, I would much rather have their portrayal of the characters be awesome, then them look exactly right. These actors haven't even been given the chance to show us their acting yet. Can't we, as a fandom, just give them that chance? Please?

My Review: The cover for this book is perfect. I love the smoking arrow. It fits The Hunger Games trilogy completely.

This book is obviously for fans of the series. If you haven’t read the books, this one would be a major spoiler for pretty much everything in the series. In all honesty, this review may be a little spoilery as well, considering the subject matter. Just a warning for all of you non-Hunger Games readers out there (Rachel @ Fiktshun, I’m looking at you). Actually, upon further reflection, I think I kept the spoilers out of my review. 

About halfway through this book, I went and requested a couple more Smart Pop books from the library. I requested the Twilight one, the one about the Sookie Stackhouse books, a Harry Potter one, and finally one about the Gilmore Girls. These are seriously addicting. Anything that analyzes books is a-okay with me.

There were a lot of references to early Romans that I hadn’t noticed while reading. The authors also brought up some really good points about our current culture and how the games aren’t that far of a stretch from where we are. I really want to purchase this book to have on hand whenever I read the series again. I think it will be really enlightening. I was in love from the start because one of the first essays was about how the series is much, much more than Team Gale vs. Team Peeta. I cannot express how annoyed I get when this series is broken down into only a love triangle. I am cringing at all of the Team Peeta/Team Gale merchandise that will come out closer to the release of the movie. 

This book really just reaffirmed my love for The Hunger Games and I’m so glad I read it. It made me think about how I viewed the series and will no doubt have an impact on my future readings. This book is definitely for all of the book nerds out there like me (and probably you). If you have ever wanted to analyze The Hunger Games (and really, if you’ve read the series, I’m sure you want to), then I would suggest checking out The Girl Who Was on Fire!

My Review: The cover, oh the glorious cover. I love all of the covers for this series. This one, with the mockingjay bursting out of the circle, is just beautiful and a bit symbolic. I literally was petting this book when it arrived on my porch. I probably shouldn’t be telling people that. 

I’ll start off my review by saying that I really loved this book and it’s one of my favorite series’ as a whole. I think Suzanne Collins’ writing is beautiful and she never fails to surprise me. Typically I can figure out what is going to happen in a story, but I find myself always saying things like, “wow!” or “oh my gosh” while reading her books. A huge bravo to her there. Mockingjay was heartbreaking and beautiful. 

Finnick is the character that grew the most for me. He caused me to tear up on more than one occasion and his death was the one that hit me the hardest. There were a few moments with Finnick that I found myself re-reading the passages. They included his monologue for the propos where he outed President Snow for what he was putting the victors through, his reunion with Annie, his final moments and when he gave Katniss the rope. Picture Annie without Finnick and I dare you not to cry. Wah. He became one of my favorite characters out of all three books. I think he even beat Rue out.

I wish we would have found out exactly what happened to Cinna. I cried when they gave Katniss the book from him. I so wished he was coming back. 

Now, I do have one major gripe with the book....Gale. I felt like he was cheated. Having some fancy job in District 2 where he was on the TV was insulting to his character, I think. Gale having a high-profile job seems so out of character for him. He felt out of character for most of the book, in fact. His story is something I am still thinking about and I don’t think I will ever be satisfied with it. My friend, Laura, commented that he would have been better off heading off into the wilderness with only a knife and a bow. I couldn’t agree more. I didn’t need him to end up with Katniss, I just needed him to be himself. Oh well, I could go on and on with this one.  

Another smaller one is that I found it a bit unbelievable for the main four (Katniss, Gale, Peeta and Haymitch) to all survive. Death is a huge part of that world, it is a war after all, so it seems as if all four of them making it out, damaged as they were, was unrealistic.

Also, here is a little grumble for the fan-base. I really, really don’t like when “teams” are brought into the foreground with this trilogy. I get the whole “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” thing because, face it, Twilight is basically a love story with a dash of paranormal. The Hunger Games trilogy is so much more. It’s a dystopian war society where the love story is just a small part of what is happening. I would have loved the books just as much (probably a bit more) if the love triangle wasn’t involved. I mean, do love triangles actually happen in real life? I have a hard enough time getting one guy to have an interest in me, let alone two guys who would absolutely do anything for me. That’s another story, I suppose. Sorry if I offended anyone there, that wasn’t my intention at all.
