In the television show V, Hobbes constantly calls Ryan out as a traitor even though his treachery has far worse consequences. Not only has Hobbes killed humans, he slept with Erica and then indirectly caused the death of Erica's ex-husband Joe. There is always that person who is quick to point out your faults, but doesn’t recognize their own.
This is pretty classic in YA books, especially when bullying is involved. One book that immediately comes to mind is The Lipstick Laws by Amy Holder. Britney calls April out on all of her actions, yet Britney does a lot of the same things herself. Britney was mean to nearly every person, but when April starts to throw a little of it back at her, Britney went crazy.
Like the movie, “Mean Girls,” I think most of this stems from insecurity. The person who is doing the accusing (in the case of “V,” it’s Hobbes) usually is doing it because they are uncomfortable with their own actions. All they want to do is put the blame on someone else. By focusing on Ryan, Hobbes doesn’t need to look at his own treachery and the consequences of it.
We've all known people like this in our lives. They are quick to point out your faults, just so they do not have to look at their own. Always fun! Feel free to share your stories in the comments.
