Would You Trust in Fate?

If you were given the opportunity to change the future, would you take matters into your own hands... or would you trust in fate?

I definitely think I would take matters into my own hands. Like many of our favorite characters in books, I don’t think I could idly sit back and just let things happen. Of course, there are certain instances where something happens that I cannot have any control over and that’s fine. I think we all need to learn to accept those things. But, if I had the chance to change them sometimes, I probably would.

One of the first books that comes to mind with this scenario is Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. Maybe it’s the whole thing with Greek mythology and fate, but Helen consciously makes some decisions for herself to fight against fate. Lucas and Helen's whole relationship is restricted by fate and they are conflicted in whether they should let fate take its course or make their own decisions.

Then, we also have characters like Bella Swan who are willing to sacrifice themselves to change the future. Bella makes her decision more for love than changing the future, but it's still the same theory. She definitely doesn't trust in fate when she heads to the ballet studio in Twilight. Even with Alice's ability to see into the future, Bella cannot sit back and see how fate plays out.
At the end of Fringe: Season 3, Peter makes the decision to sacrifice himself thus altering the future. To see all of this and more, you can order Fringe: The Complete Third Season on DVD here today:!
I have been hired by Warner Bros. WBWord division to promote Fringe: The Complete Third Season on DVD/Blu-Ray.

  1. Although I do believe just a little bit in destiny and fate, I don't think it's just set in stone. And I would totally fight it every step of the way. Even if I couldn't change it, I'd at least know I tried my very best.

Of course, if Fate were all full of great things - happy future, wealth beyond imagination - well, yeah, I don't think I'd be fighting things then. I mean, who would? Forget happiness, I want a miserable life, haha. No. Don't think so.

    Great post idea. Definitely thought-provoking.

  2. I kind of think we are right where we are supposed to be doing the thing we are supposed to be doing. I do think though we have a choice in the matter. We can stray from the path we are supposed to be on, drugs, alcohol can play a big part in that, crime can too. But for the most part, we are where we are for a reason. But I think it's b/c of our choices, though I tend to think we had a guiding hand whether it be the fates or the furies or some other higher power.

God help us all if the world depended me for the future!

  3. Very interesting question. Honestly, I think I probably wouldn't change fate. I'm a big believer in the Butterfly Effect, and always think that if something *were* changed, even a minor little tweak, even worse things would happen. Too many bad scifi movies for me, I think!

I definitely agree--if my "fate" was filled with Twitter, coffee, chocolate, friends and family... I don't think I would be fighting it too much. Contrary, if it were filled with sucky people, peaches, butterflies and no books--you bet your behind I would be fighting it. :)

I agree with you that, to a certain extent, things always happen for a reason. If you don't get that job, it's because there is the job that's right for you waiting right around the corner. There's also that whole thing of--you stopped for coffee at Starbucks, even though you normally go to Dunkin Donuts and this is where you meet love of your life/someone looking for an employee just like you/etc. It's fun to think about!

Ahhh the Butterfly Effect! I actually loved that movie haha. The whole idea of the Butterfly Effect is really interesting to me. Like... will a decision I make today change my life 20 years from now? It quite possibly could. Ah, life is so unpredictable and amazing.

Comment away, my friends. I love to chat with you guys. :)
