Judge a Book by its Cover: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Today, we have Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling. I'm going to number them so it is easier to discuss since there are so many of them.

1. US Hardcover:

2. US 10th Anniversary Edition:

3. US Mass Market Paperback:

4. UK Hardcover Children's:

5. UK Hardcover Adult's:

This is pure love. I'm going to try to keep this as surface-based as possible and try not to draw what I know from the story into this. I own Numbers 1 and 5 and they are among my favorites out of the bunch. My least favorite is definitely the Mass Market Paperback, but I feel that this is sort of obvious. It sort of looks like a guide book.

The font on Number 1 is my absolute favorite. It surprises me every time when the UK versions do not use the lightning bolt font. I also prefer this font to Numbers 2 and 3 because it is a true gold instead of just yellow. I also really enjoy how the subtitle is integrated into the wall. In Number 2, the mirror is kind of cool, but that is probably just because I know the story. I would definitely be drawn to Number 1 more than Number 2 when just browsing. The other children's cover, Number 4, isn't my favorite. I appreciate that it has "Philosopher's Stone" on it instead of "Sorcerer's Stone," but it kind of looks like the train is going to hit Harry. Also, I don't really like the red block out for the font at the top. Then there is Number 5 which is nothing like any of the other ones. I love this one for the beauty of the stone. The colors in the UK Adult versions are so vibrant and I love them.

Which cover is your favorite?

  1. I really like all 5 covers with number 5 being the most unique. It is funny how after reading a book I can picture many covers for a book (HP could have gone so many ways) though for the US the cover they chose was a good choice!

Thanks for stopping by, Felicia! You're right that they could have done a number of different things for the covers. :)

  3. I LOVE the UK adult covers! I want them so badly, but am not willing to pay the exorbitant shipping to get books I already own sent Stateside. *sigh* It's a conundrum.

I don't remember the shipping being too ridiculous. I think I spend somewhere between $90-$110 for the set including shipping. They're so pretty :)
